Elia Barceló, a well-known writer from Elda, was chosen to kick off the Moros y Cristianos festival in 2024. Standing at the top of the Embassy Castle, she was surrounded by hundreds of excited festers who had enjoyed the prelude to the proclamation. Barceló expressed her gratitude and excitement, stating that she never imagined she would have the honor of delivering the opening speech for these festivities.
In her address, Barceló praised the people of Elda, describing them as hardworking, supportive, joyful, and festive. She emphasized the sense of unity that prevails during the Moros y Cristianos celebrations, highlighting the community spirit and the feeling of belonging that these festivities bring to the town.
Barceló also emphasized the inclusive nature of the festival, noting that it is a celebration for everyone, with only basic rules of civility, common sense, and safety in place. She described the festivities as free, joyful, and filled with pride, enthusiasm, and passion, all meticulously prepared over the course of 360 days.
The official start of the festival will be marked by the Band Parade on Thursday evening, starting at 8:00 p.m. from Zapatero Square. This event is just the beginning of a series of celebrations that will continue to showcase the rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit of Elda throughout the festival.
