Red Bull F1 Advisor Marko Warns Team Must Unite to “Aspire” to the Championship
In the midst of the Formula 1 season, tensions were high within the Red Bull structure, with power struggles at the forefront. However, investigations into Christian Horner and Helmut Marko helped quell the controversies. Despite this, the departure of Adrian Newey from the energy drink team has left them feeling vulnerable in their dominant position.
Ferrari and McLaren have shown their prowess by winning races in the early stages of the Formula 1 season, indicating that Red Bull’s reign may be in jeopardy. Helmut Marko, the team’s advisor, acknowledged the need for unity in a recent interview with Kronen Zeitung, stating that they must come together to avoid being defeated once again.
“We need to unite. Even though we are no longer leading, we still want to win. We must make the most of our opportunities and strive to win the world championship,” Marko emphasized before the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix in 2024, a race that may not play to the strengths of the RB20.
Red Bull has historically struggled on circuits with bumps and kerbs that affect the car’s ride height, and Marko expressed concerns about their rivals’ strength, particularly Ferrari with their SF-24’s straight-line speed advantage: “Ferrari is superior, especially in terms of top speed. The fact is, we are not heading to Canada as favorites.”
Despite the challenges, Red Bull has a successful track record in Canada, with four consecutive victories in 2022 and 2023 with Max Verstappen behind the wheel. Earlier triumphs include Sebastian Vettel’s win in 2013 and Daniel Ricciardo’s maiden victory in 2014.
