Gayle King shared an update on her dear friend Oprah Winfrey’s health, clarifying rumors that the media mogul was hospitalized. On Tuesday, June 11, King revealed that Oprah had to cancel her appearance on CBS Mornings due to stomach issues. The following day, King posted a video on social media showing her chatting with Oprah via video call, where Oprah herself discussed her health status, confirming that she is feeling a bit better.
Oprah was supposed to appear on the morning show to discuss her latest book club selection, “Familiaris” by David Wroblewski. King clarified that she never said Oprah was hospitalized, only that she had a stomach issue. Oprah explained that she was in the emergency room due to dehydration. She had a dry mouth and couldn’t retain enough water to stay hydrated, so she went to the ER for that reason. Oprah shared that she is not yet at 100%, but she is on the path to recovery. She also mentioned that at least five people in her household also fell ill with the same virus.
King emphasized that her comments were taken out of context, as Oprah would never miss her morning show appearance unless it was a serious situation. Oprah encouraged the audience to be vigilant about handwashing and hygiene at home, as her doctor informed her that the virus was easily transmissible and could survive for up to 10 hours on surfaces like doorknobs or railings.
During the video call, King asked Oprah if she felt offended by the news being shared about her health, to which Oprah replied that she understood King’s intention to explain her absence conclusively. Oprah expressed gratitude for the concern shown by those who reached out to check on her well-being. The call between the friends took place a day after King’s on-air announcement about Oprah’s health condition.
A spokesperson for Oprah confirmed that she is recovering from a stomach virus and received IV fluids for dehydration as per her doctor’s recommendation. Oprah is resting and improving each day.
