Tetra Pak Achieves 20% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Across Value Chain
Tetra Pak has unveiled its 25th Sustainability Report, detailing the progress the company has made towards its sustainability agenda. The report focuses on five key areas: food systems, circularity, climate, nature, and social sustainability.
Released on June 5th, on the United Nations World Environment Day, the company’s FY23 Sustainability Report showcases a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain and a 47% reduction in its own operations since 2019. This puts Tetra Pak on track to achieve its goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 2030 and supports the company’s long-term ambition to work with stakeholders to achieve net zero emissions across the value chain by 2050.
A significant milestone was the launch of an aseptic paper-based beverage carton with a paper barrier that reduces its carbon footprint by a third (33%) and brings the company closer to developing the most sustainable food packaging in the world. This world-first was the result of a €100 million investment in packaging research and development in 2023, with plans for the same annual investment for the next five to ten years.
Adolfo Orive, President and CEO of Tetra Pak, stated, «Collaboration in the food industry is increasingly important to sustainably feed a growing population. Our global presence and comprehensive solutions provide us with the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders across the value chain, from farmers and food producers to suppliers, officials, consumers, and others. We are aware of the responsibility that comes with this role. We remain committed to playing our part in transforming the world’s food systems to ensure they are safer, more resilient, and sustainable.»
Tetra Pak’s FY23 Sustainability Report highlights other achievements in the past year and ongoing initiatives to protect food, people, and the planet globally. These include:
– Expanding school feeding programs, helping 64 million children in 49 countries access milk and other nutritious beverages.
– Accelerating recycling, with a 7% increase in the collection and recycling of carton packaging worldwide compared to 2022.
– Obtaining new recognition for Corporate Transparency and Performance Leadership, with Tetra Pak included in the CDP Forests ‘A List’ for the eighth consecutive year.
– Actively applying the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
